Before deciding which mode of transportation is practical, set the itinerary or list of places to visit for the number of days you intend to stay. To help you get started, here are a few general facts, Gen San is situated at the Southern part of the Philippines, safely tucked between Sarangani Province and Southwest of Davao. The city of General Santos is the “Tuna Capital” of the Philippines as Ketchikan, Alaska is the “Salmon Capital” of North America. Gen San is a road less traveled among tourists. But for travelers who lust for adventure and unpredictable turns, then Gen San is the place to be. Aside from taking a an hour and a half flight from Manila, Gen San can also be accessed through a two-hour land trip from Davao City.

Adventure seekers will delight upon discovery that this Gem of a city is truly a natural playground. Gen San provides a jumping point to SOCSKSARGEN (South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani Province and General Santos) Eco-Tourism Destinations. Spelunking at Kalaja Cave, traverse the challenging up- hill track through a mountain bike or an four-wheel ATV to Mt. Sinawal so see El Minit Geyser, white-water tubing at Maitum river and go on a deep sea odyssey at South Point. If you want to go for low-key activity, then why not read your favorite book by the beachfront in the resort of your choice or better yet appreciate rare orchids at the local orchid farm.

Although Gen San is pretty much a year-round destination, still locals insist that the best time to visit is on the first week of September. September mornings are filled with vibrancy and excitement as locals prepare for the annual “Tuna Festival” to commemorate the city’s charter anniversary and honor the fishing industry as the main engine that powers the local economy. The Tuna Parade is the highlight of the celebration together with the many fun fare featuring a variety of processed tuna products and tuna recipes that take center stage during the week long festival.

Most foodies love a good deal on reasonably priced yet quality tuna products. Your trip is not complete unless you sample and take home a piece of Gen San. Tuna shops abound the central district. There are many tuna and frozen products to choose from. Boneless Milk fish( known locally as Bangus), shrimps, tuna chunks for sashimi, tuna steaks, and tuna sausages.
