One concern about the disorder is what to expect from and how to take care of Down syndrome babies. Since trisomy 21, contrary to popular myth, is one of the most common occurring genetic disorders, it’s only prudent to disseminate information about Down syndrome babies.
The Disorder
Trisomy 21 is named so because of its cause. What causes Down syndrome is a chromosomal double in one of the 46 chromosomes of a fetus. During conception, what should happen is the zygote should inherit 23 chromosomes from Mom, and another 23 chromosomes from Dad. Down syndrome happens when an extra chromosome 21 comes along for the ride making the total chromosome count 47 instead of 46.

The Effects
The extra chromosome 21 causes mild mutations in both physical and intellectual development of the afflicted child. Also, most afflicted babies have broad hands and short fingers, as well as a smaller than normal head.
