Electricity
There is enough supply of electricity to light up the whole city. This is not much of a problem because Bacolod Electric plant is able to supply the demand of every residential area and every commercial establishment in town.
As a proof that Bacolod City is never short of electric power, the next project of the city government is all lined up – electric jeepneys! Soon enough, jeepneys run by electricity will hit the roads of Bacolod City. They will either be solar powered or with rechargeable electric batteries.
Newspapers
The most prominent local newspaper being run in Bacolod is Sun Star Bacolod. It is the leading print media that offers daily local news and beyond. Aside from being found at the streets – in every newspaper stand — of the city, Sun Star Bacolod also has an online site where it publishes day-to-day news lifted from the local, national, and international press.
Visayan Daily Star is another newspaper that is in circulation in Bacolod City. Like Sun Star, it also has an online website where you can take a peek on the latest news via the Internet.
Language
Bacolod City is in the Visayan region. But apart from the Visayan language, which is mostly used in Metro Cebu, there are different dialects that you can hear through. There is Hiligaynon or Ilonggo, which is the language of choice among the locals. A good percentage of Bacolodnons, however, are fluent in Filipino and English as well. That is, to give tourists an assurance that they will never feel misunderstood.
People and Population
Bacolod will not be called “City of Smiles” for nothing. The locals are very warm, friendly, and hospitable. As a highly urbanized city, it is not surprising at all to find that it has close to half a million inhabitants. For that, Bacolod has ranked 17 off the most populous city in the Philippines list.
People would love living in Bacolod City because there is a good balance of urbanization and nature. Although it is highly urbanized, there are certain corners, certain places spread throughout the metro where you can honestly unwind, relax, and take your mind off the hustle and bustle of the modern era. Having said that, it is quite understandable that Bacolod City is MoneySense Magazine’s bet as the Best Place to Live in the Philippines.
Sugar industry
It was the British businessmen who saw potential in the fertile land of Negros as a base for the sugar industry. By the 1800s, Negros, including Bacolod City has become the leading sugar producing province in the country. Soon enough, it was tagged as the sugar bowl of the Philippines.
Today, the province of Negros continues to provide a good chunk of the sugar supply not just in the Philippines but also in nearby countries.
