Basic Practices of Wiccans

Wiccan religion is slowly making a name for itself thanks in part to the great movies and TV shows that base their plot on magic. One movie that helped popularized Wiccan religion is the movie “Craft” and the TV series “Charmed.”

Let us try to take a look with some of the beliefs and practices of the Wiccan religion to be able to understand their religion more.

Wiccans worship the Goddess and God or the Horned God. Some traditions only worship the goddesses like the Dianic worship but in any kind of Wiccan worship, the gods only play minimal roles.

Wiccans celebrate 8 holidays. Their holidays include, Samhain or four cross quartered days, Imbolic, Lammas, Belthane, Yule, Litha, Mabon and Ostera. They also hold rituals every full and new moon called Esbats.  The traditions that are practiced by the Wiccan religion during their holidays are just traditions by the ancestral people of the European people. The practices of these holidays are a mixture of the pan-Germanic and the pan-Celtic holidays.

Wiccans could either join groups called covens or work alone called solitaries. Wiccans who join covens usually find themselves in a group numbering 13 people. If the coven has become more than 13 people, they will split up and call themselves hives. The hives will still continue to work together. When they become more, they are now known as groves.  Even though a Wiccan works alone, he or she can still join a coven. But his practices are done such as holidays; chants, etc. are done when he is alone. To be initiated to a coven Wiccans will have to study for a year and a day. The same is said for Solitary Wiccans; before they dedicate their life to Wiccan they study for a year and a day too.

Some Wiccans may believe in practicing naked, but they can also practice by wearing cotton robes and a cord because it symbolizes purity and interdependence respectively. The Wiccans will then assemble inside a magical circle that is marked using various means. The space will then be cleansed and blessed. After, the Wiccans will have a meal.

The Wiccans also associate the elements of nature for color and direction. Here are some of the associations that some Wiccans practices. The air symbolizes east and yellow; fire symbolizes south and red; water symbolizes east and blue; and earth symbolizes green and north.

For all the beliefs and practices that Wiccans do that may be weird for most of us. Let us just learn to respect their beliefs and maybe by doing so we can learn something from them as well that can help us too.
